The Wheel of Life - Unlocking Balance and Inner Peace
- By David Lowry
In a recent episode of the Peaceful Life Radio podcast, hosts David Lowry and Don Drew dove deep into a powerful self-assessment framework known as the “Wheel of Life.” This simple yet insightful tool offers a holistic approach to identifying areas of imbalance in our lives and setting goals for positive change. As Don Drew explained, “The wheel of life is a visualization tool used for self-assessment and coaching. It helps us understand how balanced and fulfilled we are in important aspects of our lives.”
The Eight Spokes of the Wheel
The Eight Spokes of the Wheel
The essence of the Wheel of Life lies in self-reflection and honest evaluation. For each category, we assign a rating based on our current level of satisfaction and fulfillment in that area, typically on a scale from 1 to 10. This process illuminates the areas where we are thriving and those that may need more attention and nurturing. Let’s explore these eight spokes in more depth
Career: The Key to Fulfillment
For me, the most priorities for a happy job are self-fulfillment and growth opportunities.
David Lowry
In the career spoke of the Wheel of Life, it’s important to evaluate job satisfaction, a sense of fulfillment in the work you do, opportunities for growth and advancement, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As David Lowry stated, “First of all, we want to evaluate, and this should make sense to you if we’re cultivating peace in our life, is job satisfaction. You should be happy in your job.” Don Drew also highlighted Herzberg’s work on motivators like finding meaning, purpose, and growth as vital for feeling good about your career.
Finances: Cultivating a Healthy Money Mindset
One of the best things in the world is not having to worry about your money." Maintaining a healthy relationship with finances includes managing expenses, establishing savings, and developing strategies to pay off debt.
David Lowry
The finances section reflects having a stable income, careful management of expenses, establishing savings, and being proactive about paying off debt. Don Drew advised, “As far as debt is concerned, all of us probably fall prey to that at some time. It’s really important to pay attention to how much debt you’re taking on.” David Lowry added, “We’re talking about learning to find peace with the income you make, learning how to enjoy the money you make without overspending.”
Health: Nurturing Mind, Body, and Spirit
Good balance in health is about progress, not perfection. A balanced approach to health encompasses diet, exercise, mental well-being, and emotional self-care.
Don Drew
A balanced approach to the health spoke means nurturing physical health through diet and exercise, as well as prioritizing mental and emotional wellbeing. As Don Drew said, “Most experts would tell you that the two primary areas of concern are going to be diet and exercise. What we take into our bodies and how we use our bodies.” David Lowry emphasized, “You need to be honest with yourself. If you’re experiencing anxiety, depression, or feel like you have a mental health challenge, do something about that.”
Relationships: The Foundation of a Peaceful Live
I believe that with all of my heart thaat we've got to take care of our connections with other people. Strong relationships require quality time, open communication, conflict resolution skills, and a sense of belonging.
David Lowry
The relationships section focuses on quality time with loved ones, open communication, conflict resolution skills, and cultivating a sense of belonging. David Lowry believes, “Most of our problems of happiness and cultivating a peaceful life stem from this area of quality relationships.” He advises, “Show your love language in very concrete ways. Maybe your partner is used to helping you and you do things together. Take it over one day and say, you relax while I do all of this.”
Personal Growth: Embracing Lifelong Learning
Try something new. Try something you never thought you would do!
Don Drew
In the personal growth area, it’s about committing to self-improvement, lifelong learning, and exploring new experiences that contribute to fulfillment. Don Drew said, “Try something new. Try something you never thought you would,” while David Lowry added, “Work-life balance, particularly when it comes to personal growth, is more of a journey, and when something looks interesting, don’t be afraid to explore it and learn something about it.”
Fun and Recreation: Essential, Not Luxuries
Fun and recreation are not luxuries; they are essential components of a balanced and fulfilling life. Engaging in enjoyable leisure activities reduces stress and recharges our batteries.
Don Drew
This spoke reflects making time for leisure activities that bring joy, relaxation, and stress relief. Don Drew noted, “Fun and recreation are not one size fits all. What brings joy to one person might not be enjoyable for another. The key is to prioritize activities you genuinely enjoy and effectively help you unwind and recharge.” David Lowry recommended taking “micro breaks” throughout the day to recharge.
Physical Environment: Curating a Sancturary
When you come home, it ought to feel like, 'I'm home! Our surroundings can greatly impact our sense of peace and productivity when they are curated with intention.
David Lowry
The physical environment section is about intentionally curating living and work spaces that feel peaceful, productive, and inspiring. As Don Drew shared, “We actually have a room in our house that we call the Peace Room.” David Lowry advised, “Learn how to create meaning in the things in your office, your bedroom, your living room and den or wherever you hang out. It’ll make a big difference in your life.”
Spirituality: Seeking Meaning and Connection
Our spiritual connection is our compass. This is the thing that makes life worth living. Developing spiritual practices and aligning with our values nurtures inner peace.
David Lowry
The spirituality area focuses on exploring values, developing spiritual practices, and nurturing a sense of meaning, purpose and connection to something greater than oneself. David Lowry reflected, “This is the thing that makes life worth living…Find those things that give you meaning, whatever they are.” Don Drew added, “Sometimes that means exploring different traditions, ideas, developing spiritual practices, and finding practices that nurture our sense of meaning and connection.”
The Journey Toward Balance
A peaceful life is built upon habits that we cultivate." Remember, Balance doesn't necessarily mean a 50-50 split between work and life. It's really about finding a sustainable rhythm that allows you to thrive in both areas and reduces work-related stress."
Don Drew
So, take a moment to reflect on your own Wheel of Life. Where do you feel fulfilled and balanced? What areas might need more attention? Approach this exercise with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to grow.
